With the runaway success of the single ‘iFly’ (you know the one: “I f**king love you, I think you’re pretty”), Ball Park Music’s profile is certainly going from strength to strength. The six-headed pop collective has been pricking ears with their lively blend of ingenuis indie-pop/rock and turning heads with their raucous live show, one where literally anything can happen.

The band recently released their second EP Conquer the Town, Easy as Cake to an unsuspecting Australian audience and the response has been overwhelming – ‘iFly’ proved to be ideal triple j material as it lept right to high rotation and has repeatedly featured as the most popular on Super Request. Another of the EP’s finest moments – ‘Western Whirl’ – was nominated for both The Courier Mail People’s Choice Song of the Year and Best Alternative at this year’s Q Song Awards – it didn’t win but a French milk company loved it enough to feature it in their latest campaigns.

All in all, this sets the band up nicely for the remaining months of 2010 where they will be undertaking their very first national tour, a brand new single release – but more about that later. Thursday, September 2 will be their last headline appearance in Brisbane, possibly for the year and they’re celebrating by re-releasing their debut EP Rolling On The Floor, Laughing Ourselves To Sleep in fancy new packaging (you might remember their remaining stock being sizzled in a house fire last year) and launching a new range of Ball Park Music merchandise. Joining them on the night will be the indie-rock goodness of the Gold Coast’s Oceanics and the local emerging star on the rise Emma-Louise.

Following their sold-out EP launch last month and leading into a quick interstate jaunt, Bonfire Nights will play a hometown show at The Clubhouse next Saturday, August 28. Transferring the light and dark shades of their EP to the stage, the band have honed a natural live energy into a show which has quickly evolved from the coincidental callaboration of the bedroom project.

Their debut self-titled release has already received early kudos from Japanese radio station SECM17 and Radio New York’s ‘B-Sides’ (where they received Feature Artist status) as well as spot plays on stations in South Africa and Argentina and, of course, back home on triple j.

Horse Fight and Our Ithaca Creek will lend support at the The Clubhouse show, with additional between set and after show entertainment from the John Steel Singer DJs. Entry for the night is free.

The Boat People have a lot to smile about right now. With their latest and greatest album Dear Darkly receiving no less than glowing, four star reviews, single ‘Damn Defensive’ all over the radio, video ‘Under the Ocean’ all over the TV, a triple j Like A Version spot nailed and a continuously-growing list of accolades piling up, you could say things are looking good.

Fresh off a successful album launch tour that saw them play to sold-out crowds nationwide, the hard-working foursome refuse to kick back on their laurels and instead will be heading straight out on the road with Melbourne’s oddball performer The Bedroom Philosopher.

From Brisbane down to Melbourne and including the likes of Canberra, Wollongong, Geelong and Hepburn Springs, the Boaties aren’t stopping there, another headline tour is already being planned – stay tuned!

RECENT PRAISE FOR THE BOAT PEOPLE

Sydney Morning Herald ★★★★
“Both fresh and refreshed, sparkling with pleasure while not afraid to ask a few existential questions”

Rave Album of the Week ★★★★
“A genuinely adventurous and diverse album.”

JMag
“Dear Darkly succeeds in its moments of urgency and its willingness to experiment beyond the simple pop sensibilities”

Mess + Noise
“Dear Darkly should be lauded for its adventurous spirit, intelligent arrangements, but most of all, for being a sublime, idiosyncratic pop record.”

Having been present on the scene for a very short time, Bonfire Nights are the hot, new rock duo you may have heard about. If you haven’t, then it’s time – the pair launch their self-titled debut EP with their first interstate show at MUM (World Bar) Friday, September 3 with Post Paint and Send Fire.

The raw and untamed nature of their debut offering has already been compared to the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Kills and has received early kudos from Japanese radio station SECM17 and Radio New York’s ‘B-Sides’ (where they received Feature Artist status) as well as spot plays on stations in South Africa and Argentina and, of course, back home on triple j.

The EP was recorded at Massive Studios in Brisbane with producer Matt Redlich and is a reflection of their live sound – light and dark shades moving from stomping indie rock to ambient psychedelic pop. Using only a four-track analogue tape machine, the band was able to capture an organic and natural energy that permeates throughout their music.
