Having dusted off a hectic first leg of their Air Sick tour, Hungry Kids of Hungary proudly played to a sell-out crowd at Oxford Arts Factory in Sydney and a near capacity crowd at the East Brunswick Club in Melbourne. The cancellation of their Lost Weekend performance will only add to the anticipation from local audiences as the band take their headline show to The Zoo in Brisbane on Friday, March 12 and Great Northern Hotel in Byron Bay on Saturday, March 13. The Kids will again be joined by the stellar line-up of Ernest Ellis and Boy & Bear with the show receiving warm reviews down south as one of the finest triple-bill treats to hit our stages in sometime. Additionally local indie up-starts Oh Ye Denver Birds will open the night in Brisbane.

The shows will be the last for Hungry Kids of Hungary before they head overseas throughout April to July to launch an overseas assault on the UK and USA before the release of their debut album in July. Pre-sales are selling fast for the final two shows of the tour, get in now to ensure you don’t miss out.

Prolific art-rockers Drawn from Bees have bagged the last instalment of their self-imposed schedule to write, record and release a body of work every six months for two years. Even though an EP would have easily completed the project, the ambitious foursome have just laid down the finishing touches to a whole album this time around, titled Fear Not The Footsteps Of The Departed. ‘Run Away’, the lead single from the album to be released in the coming months, is a foot-stomping romp, incorporating the band’s fervently complimented four-part harmonies alongside thick acoustic strumming and a subtle keys melody. The single shows a playful side to Drawn from Bees and provides a lovely glimpse into the hearts of their cultured, well-dressed personas.

Wearing the radiant glow of a Brisbane buzz-band whose current four-piece incarnation has been in existence since only August 2009, Mapletons have done very well for themselves indeed, having already tumbled their twee blend of technicolour pop-folk around the country in support of Howling Bells and Whitley in this short time.

After cornering the market on sweetly melodic, harmony-rich sounds, Mapletons will launch their debut six-track EP Origami Army to Brisbane audiences on Saturday February 27 at The Troubadour. With support from the haunting brilliance of McKisko and the jangly alt-pop of Edward Guglielmino and The Show, the launch will be a spotlight on the brilliant creative talents currently bubbling through Brisbane’s veins.

Beginning life as a duo way back when guitarist Derek Orr (holder of a true-dinks reference from Mr Peter Gabriel touting his ‘natural creative flair’) and keys-man Kane Mazlin were scoring wins in national song-writing competitions, Mazlin left to pursue mounting Hungry Kids of Hungary commitments. Rather than folding, Orr expanded on the momentum already built by rallying around the creative hub of musicians always crossing paths in Brisbane (Hanabi, Ellington, The Ehlers, Levic) to incorporate the all-singing combination of Anita Goldsworthy on keys and lead vocals, Carl Roosmale-Cocq on bass and programming duties and Mitch Clark on drums.

With ‘Gunpowder’ featured on soon-to-be-released indie film Jucy (from the directors of AFI nominated All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane), a music video for ‘Seaside’ soon due and further interstate forays on the horizon, the current glow looks set to form an all-encompassing sweat by the time 2010 plays out.
